PGMA's Choice of Appointees

The first time i heard of this news, was actually in one of the shouts of my batchmate and fellow parliamentarian in facebook. 


I am sorry to say, that i really saw it funny that the term "manicurista" was boldly written in her status. Well, being who we are, outright expression of sentiments is common among members of the youth parliament. 

I initially thought that it was one of those exaggerated news, much to my amusement, hoping to be fair to someone i don't even know, I did try to suggest that maybe, she was not literally the president's manicurist. 

However, to my dismay, my friend had all the right to roll her eyes in exasperation because, it was true that the president's manicurist and to add to this comedy, the president's hardinero was also appointed in another agency. 

It may be arrogant, or maybe less Christian to criticize these people who were appointed to these posts for being who they are and judged for what they do.  But being objective about it? Indeed, the expression "ONLY IN THE PHILIPPINES" applies to this headline. 

Much that it is true, that the president enjoys the power to exercise the right to appoint people in her cabinet, we are to assume, that these people, are those that have the full trust and confidence of the president.  I do believe that the same principle, applies to appointments made in simple organizations. 

On the assumption that the person, based on the judgment of the appointing officer meets the minimum requirements the organization has set. A big part of such appointments are  centered on TRUST. 


I doubt, anyone given the opportunity to be an appointing officer of any organization or agency will appoint someone he has never met nor even worked with. Human nature would dictate, that we shall always appoint those we know and exercise our prerogative to choose. 


BUT, granting this to be so, every appointing officer should also make sure that these appointments, much that they are based on trust will NOT fall short of the expectations their positions require.

Looking at the other side of the scenario, when we elect our leaders, we bestow on them our trust to improve our country, to make sound decisions and exhaust all means to use our resources to the best of the advantage of the nation, and not to serve a few. 


But unfortunately, that will only remain in theory reality paints a different picture.

No matter how much i read the defense of the Palace on these appointments, at the end of the day, the fact remains, these appointments were not well thought of. 

Our elected officials were given the trust to make the right choices and that same trust was the reason they are placed into power. We voted for them, because we believed they can lead the country to better heights. 

Unfortunately, I do not see an iota of wisdom in these decisions. Government should serve the people and ensure that everyone is given equal opportunities, rights and services. 

Appointments such as these speak for it self, there was a breach in the peoples' trust and abuse of the power,  in the positions given to them by the people.

News, such as these, should be an eye opener on our choices for the coming 2010 elections. People should think seriously whom to vote and lead the country. 

We should make a stand and make our votes count. Relying on surveys alone should not be the be all and end all of our decision to choose who would the best one to govern. 

Because, at the end of the day, when our votes have been cast and our choice for the next 6 years fails to meet our expectations, there is no one else to blame but ourselves. We did placed them there in the first place.
